The Cinema Warehouse is proud to present another After Effects tutorial, this time regarding an extremely useful and “Authentic” CRT imitation television effect.

By the way. Any time I say “diode,” I really should be saying “phosphor.” Calling those RGB bits diodes is more an anachronistic thing with me. So I apologize for that gaffe.

This CRT Effect is far more tactile, realistic, retro, and believable than I ever thought possible within After Effects. And all of it is possible without 3rd party plugins or extra elements. Everything you need you can make in-house.

Basically, this effect is done using black and white mattes of a field of elongated dots, representing the red, green, and blue channels of an image, and then three separate videos with a levels adjustment added to them, are funneled through each of these three mattes. And there ya go. But the fields of dots, or diodes (as I call them) are a little complicated to create if you don’t know the procedure, and getting the effect to look good and clear can take some effort. So if you’d like to see the whole process, then check out this video, as well as some of my others if you want to learn some more advanced techniques.

I tend to be very thorough in my tutorials, and I make sure to cover concepts that you might not be familiar with in order to make the whole process understandable to just about anyone. I also like to include a few words or warning and other explanations, just to make sure you don’t get yourself stuck later on.

I think this particular effect is important, and needs to be explained, because it is incredibly easy, and should no longer remain something that only the professionals can achieve. It’s almost just as easy as slapping on your typical venetian blinds effect with a bit of blur and chromatic aberration. It’s also far better looking and doesn’t look cheap when all’s said and done.

I hope you have fun with this one. There are many possibilities and applications of these techniques, not just for this effect, but many others that work off the same principles.
